Dr. Alex McKamie has earned degrees in Violin Performance from the University of North Texas (Doctor of Musical Arts, studying with Dr. Felix Olschofka); University of Northern Colorado (Master of Music); and Truman State University (Bachelor of Music), in addition to a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies - Chinese Language and Culture, also from Truman. As a graduate teaching assistant he led sectional rehearsals for the first and second violins, taught studio violin, and performed in graduate chamber and orchestral ensembles. A recipient of the Charles Moore M.D. Concertmaster Fellowship, he also completed a Performer's Certificate in orchestral violin studies at the University of Wyoming.
During the summer of 2019, McKamie sat concertmaster of the orchestra for the International Lyric Academy, in Vicenza, Italy. Among various chamber music recitals and opera-scenes concerts, complete performances of Mozart’s Don Giovanni were given at the Teatro Olimpico, a sixteenth-century theatre listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In October of 2018, he was awarded a travel grant to China from the UNT College of Music, to appear on an international panel for the College of Liberal Arts at Shanghai University. As a featured speaker at the “Forum on International Humanities Education,” he gave a lecture entitled “Digital Humanities and Music Performance” and participated in a panel discussion devoted to music in the liberal arts.
As founding member and director of The Alton Ensemble http://www.thealtonensemble.com/ Dr. McKamie has given performances that include appearances on national TV (Lifetime Channel: “Married at First Sight – Dallas,” episodes 1 & 2); at the American Airlines Center in Dallas; the Perot Museum of Nature and Science; and numerous other venues in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. From 2021 to 2023, Dr. McKamie served as Adjunct Professor of Violin at Texas Woman's University (Denton), and subsequently accepted a position with the music technology firm, Score Follower, while continuing his performing and teaching career, now in St. Louis.
As a student, he played in masterclasses conducted by noted classical musicians, in both the United States and Italy, including Alvaro de Granda (Assistant Concertmaster, Cleveland Orchestra); Rachel Barton Pine (international concert violinist); and Alberto Bologni (Prof. of Violin, Conservatorio di Musica Luigi Boccherini in Lucca, Italy). Alex McKamie’s principal teachers include: Dr. Felix Olschofka, University of North Texas; Dr. John Fadial, University of Wyoming; Professor Margaret Soper Gutierrez, University of Northern Colorado; Dr. Jubal Fulks, University of Northern Colorado; Professor Richard Fuchs, University of Northern Colorado; and Mrs. Amy Kuhlmann Appold, first violinist and founding member of the Maia String Quartet. He is the son of David and Shirley McKamie, members of the emeriti music faculty at Truman State University in Kirksville, MO.
Dr. McKamie plays on a 1929 Ernst Heinrich Roth instrument purchased from Claire Givens Violin shop in Minneapolis, MN.
